چکیده

A well-known problem in low Reynolds number hydrodynamics 1) is to calculate the hydrodynamic interactions between spherical particles moving in a fluid, as its solution is necessary for understanding the properties of suspensions. While the first treatment of such hydrodynamic interactions dates from 1911 when Smoluchowski 2) analysed the hydrodynamic friction between two spherical particles, there has recently been a revival of interest in this problem3-1°)t. This renewed interest is greatly motivated by recent advances in experimental lightscattering techniques in which multiple scattering is reduced, either by using scattering cells of different sizes"'12), or by using a solvent and solute which have refractive indices that are not too different~3), or still by using a two-beam, two-detector light scattering spectrometerl4). These techniques enable one to single out the effects due to hydrodynamic interactions in suspensions, so that a comparison between theory and experiment can be made. As an example, we note that the experiments by Knops-Werkhoven and Fijnaut ~3) on the mutual diffusion coefficient of dilute silica dispersions were in good agreement with the values obtained theoretically by Batchelor 5) and FelderhoPS). In general, correction terms to e.g. the diffusion constant can, for dilute suspensions, be obtained by taking only hydrodynamic pair interactions into account. Since it was doubtful that this is a reasonable approximation for suspensions which are not dilute, we recently developed a systematic expansion to treat the full many sphere problem~°). This work extended the original analysis

Collective diffusion in sheared colloidal suspensions

Collective diffusivity in a suspension of rigid particles in steady linear viscous flows is evaluated by investigating the dynamics of the time correlation of long-wavelength density fluctuations. In the absence of hydrodynamic interactions between suspended particles in a dilute suspension of identical hard spheres, closed-form asymptotic expressions for the collective diffusivity are derived ...

Holographic Experiments on Defects

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the anisotropic charge transport properties of both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric matter fields on (2+1)dimensional defects coupled to a (3+1)-dimensional N = 4 SYM “heat bath”. We focus on the case of a finite external background magnetic field, finite net charge density and finite mass. At high frequencies, we discover a spectrum of quasipart...

Full sphere hydrodynamic and dynamo benchmarks

Convection in planetary cores can generate fluid flow and magnetic fields, and a number of sophisticated codes exist to simulate the dynamical behaviour of such systems. We report on the first community activity to compare numerical results of computer codes designed to calculate fluid flow within a whole sphere. The flows are incompressible and rapidly rotating and the forcing of the flow is e...

Many-sphere Hydrodynamic Interactions Iii. the Influence of a Plane Wall

The hydrodynamic interactions between spherical particles in a viscous fluid play an essential role in the theory of suspensions’). Characteristic of these interactions via the fluid is their very long range. As a consequence, the influence of boundary walls on properties of suspensions can be of importance even in cases where the vessel containing the suspension is very large. The velocity of ...
